providing affordable housing opportunities in and around Wendell.
In those roles, Jones saw firsthand what owning a home meant to the people of his hometown. He became a strong advocate for housing as a Wendell Town Commissioner, planning board member, and finally Mayor in 1989.
In 1993, an opportunity arose for Jones to expand his advocacy efforts statewide. At that time, Governor Jim Hunt appointed Jones to chair the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency. Jones was twice reappointed –by Governors Easley and Perdue –to serve a total of 17 years.
Jones deserves a lot of credit for NCHFA’s reputation as the best state housing finance agency in the country. He was so effective in his position that he was elected to serve two terms as president of the National Council of State Housing Boards.
In his 15-year tenure as Mayor of Wendell, Jones’ skillful leadership was recognized again. He was elected by his peers to serve as President of the NC League of Municipalities in 1998-1999.
Congratulations to these two deserving individuals!
