Hello from the Outer Banks of North Carolina! Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Mark Martin and I am your 2020 President of the North Carolina Home Builders Association. I am a custom home builder and remodeler out of Kitty Hawk, NC.
If you want to learn more about me, the most recent Winter issue of this magazine includes a story to tell you more. I looked back at that story to write this column because I remembered the following quote I said: “I’m excited to lead NCHBA at this important moment. We all know the challenges we face in our industry, but there’s so much opportunity to meet them. As the largest HBA in the country, we’re uniquely positioned to lead the fight on issues of affordability, regulations, the skills gap and more.”
As of writing this column, the idea that we’re in an “important moment” rings even more true. COVID-19 has upended how we gather, do business and even worship. I know many of you are having flashbacks to the bleak days of the Great Recession. My hope is that the lessons we learned then will help us get through the difficult weeks ahead.
Although the scale of this disruption is unprecedented in modern history, I’m optimistic that certain key variables -low interest rates and strong demand for housing -will help our industry weather this storm.
In the meantime, it is important for us to do all that we can to follow guidelines about social distancing, avoid large gatherings and protect the health and wellbeing of our workforce.
COVID-19 will affect all of us, but I am proud to know that an association as strong as NCHBA stands behind our industry in such critical times. Though the virus may impact how we do the work of our association, it will not change what we do. We will continue to stand together and represent the best interests of our more than 14,000 members. Moreover, we will never give up the fight to make the American Dream of home ownership attainable for all North Carolinians.
As this situation evolves, NCHBA will continue to provide updates and arrange new avenues for us to communicate and share best practices in the weeks ahead. Together, we will find the strength, ingenuity and grit to keep pushing our industry forward.
