President’s Message
Let’s Get To Work
By Phil Warrick, 2019 NCHBA President
Phil Warrick

The year is off to a great start and I’m excited to be on this journey with you. As your 2019 president of the North Carolina Home Builders Association, it has been an honor to speak with a good number of you as I’ve traveled across the state for local installations, special events and meetings. In my role I have the opportunity to get an up-close look at all the critical work our members do to promote our industry -including defending against unnecessary regulations that increase the cost of a home and cultivating the next generation of builders and skilled tradespeople, just to mention a few.

The amount of time and resources our members commit to this work is impressive. Our industry sets a high standard for involvement. And we can’t afford to back down from doing all that we can to promote and

defend the home building industry. As we all know, the threats to our livelihood and to housing affordability aren’t going away.

So let’s not waste any opportunities to work together and defend our industry. Coming up soon are two very important events that I hope you’ll take part in. First, on Tuesday, May 21, NCHBA will host its annual Legislative Reception from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm at the NC Museum of History in downtown Raleigh. This event immediately follows our 2nd Quarter Board and Committee Meetings earlier in the day. We’ve invited all of the House and Senate members of the General Assembly, as well as members of the Council of State and the Governor to attend this reception and to meet with home building professionals from across North Carolina. This reception is an absolutely critical opportunity to show the strength and high level of engagement of our members. Lawmakers don’t just want to hear from NCHBA’s leadership –they want to hear from their constituents. Please make sure you’re in attendance.

And while you’re in Raleigh, the following day, Wednesday, May 22, we have a second opportunity for you to let your voice be heard by lawmakers. NCHBA’s Legislative Day is when members canvas the General Assembly to meet with legislators from their respective districts. It’s a strong display of our commitment to our industry and to keeping housing affordable for North Carolina families.

I hope to see you on both days, and I hope to see many new faces! I know it’s difficult in this very busy time of the year to be away from the jobsite for such functions, but the bottom line is: our legislative efforts save you money. We’ve got to keep the pedal on the floor.

These are just two opportunities; there are many more at both the state and local level to become involved. And if you’re an “old-timer” like me, please consider bringing along a younger counterpart –maybe there’s someone within your own company –who can benefit from taking part in HBA activities.

The future is here and the time is now. We’ve not only got to get these younger professionals involved, we’ve got to start giving them the reigns and letting them lead.

Finally, I look forward to meeting many more of you as this year moves forward. I’m happy to be in this fight to defend and promote the home building industry alongside such hardworking and dedicated professionals as yourselves.
