President’s Message
Optimism And Innovation Will Move Us Forward In 2017
by Gary Embler, 2017 NCHBA President
Gary Embler

A few months into my presidency, I can say that I feel right at home! The year is off to a great start, and all of you have made me feel very welcome. Thank you for that. I’m excited for this year because I believe we’re on the cusp of great things happening in the home building industry. I could feel the excitement at the annual International Builders’ Show in Orlando as well as recently during NCHBA’s Regional Leadership Training Forums.

As I walked the floor in Orlando, I was truly impressed with the size and scope of this year’s show. I think that’s a great indication of where our industry is headed. The optimism and innovation on display at IBS was contagious. Builders were lined up to meet with exhibitors, and students filled classrooms eager to learn. I hope to channel that spirit of energy and excitement and bring it to all of you this year as your president, because there’s a lot of work to do.

Our legislative team is already busy in Raleigh, putting in long hours to make sure that our interests are well-represented in order to keep the costs of owning a home affordable for millions of North Carolinians. And planning for our annual 21st Century Building Expo & Conference is well underway. Note: I hope you’ve marked your calendar for the new expo dates this year –October 11-13, 2017. In the immediate future, we’re gearing up for the Builders Classic Golf Tournament. This great event not only provides a valuable networking opportunity, it raises thousands of dollars to benefit the North Carolina Home Builders Educational & Charitable Foundation (NCHBECF) scholarship fund. Last year, we were able to award $10,500 in scholarships to four deserving students, who are family members of NCHBA members. Moreover, these students are preparing for a future in the building industry. So I hope you’ll join us in supporting this outstanding cause on Wednesday, April 19 at Lonnie Poole Golf Course in Raleigh.

Finally, I want to take a moment to thank all of you who attended NCHBA’s Regional Leadership Training Forums earlier this year. If you’ve never been, I hope you’ll take the opportunity to attend next year, especially if you’re on the leadership ladder of a local HBA or if you’re just interested in learning more about what goes on at the state level. As in recent years, we continue to hone these meetings so that they are a valuable service to our members. One
