STARS Awards & Galaxy Awards Honor Best Of The Home Building Industry

The North Carolina Home Builders Association presented nearly 50 prestigious STARS awards and eight inaugural Galaxy Awards at the annual STARS Awards Gala on September 14 at the Omni Charlotte Hotel. The STARS Awards program honors the achievements of home building industry professionals from North Carolina and surrounding states. A new addition this year, the Galaxy Awards honored individuals and teams for their outstanding sales performance.

STARS Awards winners received recognition in areas such as marketing and advertising, web design, sales/information center, landscape design, interior merchandising, architecture/floor plan, remodeling/renovation and special projects. Awards were also given to local home builders associations.

The coveted Super Star Awards went to the following recipients:

Ralph Doggett of Doggett Realty & Construction, Inc., was named the Distinguished Builder Member of the Year. Doggett is a member of the Alamance Caswell Home Builders Association. He was nominated for outstanding leadership, service and dedication to the home builders association federation and the industry in general. Doggett has been a pillar of the Alamance Caswell HBA since 1991, having held many leadership positions through the years. He is a successful builder and realtor with more than 40 years of experience. Indeed, he was honored with the Builder of the Year Award in 1995 and 1999. In 2002, he received the Ray Whitesell Lifetime Achievement Award, the most prestigious award given by the Alamance Caswell Builders Association.

The Distinguished Associate Member of the Year Award went to Lauren Hill Spruill of Piedmont Natural Gas. Spruill exemplifies service, dedication, and energy –qualities that have generated enthusiasm and increased participation among HBA members. She is an active member of two HBAs –the HBA of Northeastern North Carolina and the Outer Banks Home Builders Association. Moreover, Spruill is a highly regarded member of her local community, having been the 2015 Ambassador of the Year by a local Chamber of Commerce.

The Community of the Year honor went to Traditions at Wake Forest / JPM South Development in Wake Forest, NC. They are members of the HBA of Raleigh-Wake Co. Traditions atWake Forest provides exceptional amenities and a happy lifestyle for residents, while offering a diverse selection of homes and price points. The community goes above and beyond to preserve its natural environment and to cultivate a sense of small-town charm. Traditions also took home the Special Award by an HBA Member for its Gaylan Bishop Fundraiser, a charity event that helped raised money for a local family burdened with expenses following a medical emergency.

The award for New Executive Officer of the Year went to Jackie Lang, the EO of the HBA of Craven and Pamlico Counties. So far in her tenure, Lang has inspired increased membership participation, revitalized events and cultivated stronger relationships with the local community. She has been praised as a go-getter whose commitment to teamwork and fresh ideas has helped her association grow and succeed. Notably, this award is limited to executive officers with less than three years experience.

Natalie Fryer of the Fayetteville HBA was named Executive Officer of the Year. Fryer has helped guide the association through the Great Recession, facing a dire financial low point in 2012. Through her leadership, Fryer engineered a turnaround that has increased revenue, grown membership and fostered greater community relations. Fryer truly represents service, strength and resolve in the face of difficulty.

The Builders Mutual Insurance Company Safety Program of the Year award went to Curtis Construction Company, Inc., a member of the HBA of Kinston. The company places a high value on safety and has made its safety program an essential part of its culture. Curtis recently hired a full-time Safety Coordinator, and the company requires all employees to participate in an expansive curriculum of safety training.
