I can’t tell you how many times this past year as your NCHBA president I’ve been asked, “How are you doing?” And each and every time my response has been simple and succinct: “Living the Dream!” It sounds cliché, but this answer perfectly describes my experience.
Sometimes, it’s easy for us as builders to simply forget that what we do for a living is important to so many people. In the daily grind of homebuilding, we forget that together we are building dreams for home owners every day. It’s even easier to lose sight of the fact that we’re blessed to be doing this work. At the end of the day, no other industry can compete with us in job satisfaction. And I believe there is no other organization like NCHBA. I believe we are all “living the dream” as members of this great industry and association.
When I began this journey in NCHBA leadership more than seven years ago, I never imagined that one day I would be sitting here wrapping up my final presidents message. I told you all at the beginning of this year how excited I was to serve this great organization during the post-recession rise in our industry. And it’s truly been amazing to watch our entire membership climb, thrive and get excited again.
I owe so much of the success of this past year, first and foremost, to my “A team” of volunteer leaders that have served alongside me on our 2016 NCHBA Executive Board. I also owe a huge thanks to the incredible group of local HBA leaders and executive officers that have shown such great support to me across our state. I especially appreciate the long-standing support I’ve received from our past presidents each step of the way, and always when I needed it most. Last but not least, it’s been my privilege to have served with the support of the most incredible state home builder association staff in the country. Each and every staff member has helped me fulfill this dream and also helped carry the excitement and vision of our executive team to our membership every day this past year. And, of course, none of this would have been possible without the expert professional wisdom and guidance of the one and only, Mike Carpenter. To this incredible support group of great NCHBA leaders and staff members I truly owe this past year’s success to you.
As we look back on 2016 and all of our accomplishments, I’m even more excited to see what the future holds under my good friend and partner in leadership, Gary Embler. I’m confident that he may say that he’s “living the dream” all year, as often as (and hopefully more than!) I did.
Thank you again to the entire membership of the North Carolina Home Builders Association for allowing me to serve as your president this past year.
